Trey’s Opinion of the Month

Travel baseball has gotten absolutely out of control. Maybe it’s because I’m in Florida and we can play all year here… but these kids never take a break! It’s my opinion that if we continue to allow our baseball athletes to play all year we will continue to see a rise in severe and career ending arm injuries. We as coaches, Doctors, and parents have to be smarter about developing these athletes. I think parents get caught up in keeping up and are afraid their kid will get behind if they don’t play all the time.

The irony is, if you’re too busy playing travel ball and you aren’t hitting the gym… this is what is actually causing you to fall behind. I’m friends with MLB scouts and have helped develop MLB players, they all say the same thing.. Teams draft tools and athletes, not high school stats. The way to develop elite velocity, running, and power is at the gym. Once developed, then it can be expressed on the field.

Cool Baseball Tech I Found

I was able to try out one of the pitchLogic balls this past week and it seemed like a super cool thing to have. The monthly fees to have one ranges from $20-30 on the website. Given the data and insight it provides pitchers, it seems worth the purchase. *I am not compensated or have any relationship with pitchLogic

Research Paper of the Month

Here was a fascinating paper that I read this month! The paper looked at muscle activity of the pronator teres muscle during pitching. This muscle is a dynamic stabilizer of the inner elbow and even blends into the UCL. This makes this muscle of vital importance to keep healthy and strong!

The paper found that the pronator teres muscle was more active and had greater stiffness during curveballs than during fastballs. The authors suggested that this could mean that curveballs cause greater stress on this muscle and that curveballs could be a cause for more inner elbow injuries. Curveballs are throw with a more supinated wrist position than fastballs so this plausibly is the cause of greater pronator teres stress as compared to a fastball. It will be interesting to see if further research backs this up.

Athletedocrehab Announcements!

I am excited to announce 2 things in particular! One, I have opened up an option to work with me remotely. But, the short and simple, I create digital strength, mobility, arm care, and conditioning plans for baseball players. It’s all delivered via the TrueCoach app and I am right there with you every step of the way. This is perfect for a serious baseball athlete who really wants to take their game to the next level. More info on the home page!

Second big announcement… I am designing an App for arm care and mobility! This is still probably 6 months out or so, but it’s going to be awesome! I am brain dumping everything I know about keeping your arm and body healthy for baseball all in one place. It’s going to be fairly priced (think $20-30 per month) and you’ll have a weekly plan that tells you exactly what you need to move better and stay healthy.

I hope you guys learned something from this newsletter! Feel free to email me any topics you’d like me to cover!
